Upper Delaware River Advocates Join Together on NYS Funding Campaign

On August 5, Friends of the Upper Delaware River (FUDR), NY League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV), and the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed (CDRW) hosted a press conference on the river in Callicoon, NY to tee up our 2021/22 campaign to secure support from New York State to protect and restore the Upper Delaware River.

The three organizations spearheaded the formation of the Alliance for the Upper Delaware River Watershed which includes more than 30 organizations and individuals from throughout the Delaware tailwaters. Alliance members are united with a single mission of generating critically needed state funding and technical resources that will support and institutionalize a comprehensive and ongoing watershed protection program for the Upper Delaware River.

The Upper Delaware River is an environmental jewel and an economic engine for our region but has historically been in the political shadows of the state’s many other iconic water bodies. This is especially true below the NYC reservoirs where, among other recreational amenities, a world class wild trout fishery anchors a robust tourism economy that generates hundreds of millions dollars each year to support local communities and residents.

A special thanks to our distinguished guests who joined us at the Callicoon event:

-NYS Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther

-NYS Senator Mike Martucci

-NYC Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Vinny Sapienza

-NYLCV President Julie Tighe

Our speakers join a growing alliance of Upper Delaware River advocates as we increase our fire power in Albany to make sure the river gets its fair share in 2022!

We will keep everybody updated and will be seeking your support as this effort unfolds. Stay tuned!
